Saving projects very slow

We are using MS Project 2003 server. Lately, when we attempt to save a
project, it gets about 1/2 way finished (progress bars on lower left-hand
corner) and it seems to "stop". It doesn nothing for a minute or two
(sometimes several) - then it suddenly finishes.

This stopping 1/2 way through seems strange. Any ideas of what the problem
might be??

Is this a very large project? Can you give us an idea on the number of
resources, tasks and assignments for the specific projects?

We have seen similar behaviour for projects that more than 1000 project
calendars set up. Open the project plan and go to Tool - Change Working Time
and check how many calendars are being displayed in the drop-down list.

It doesn't matter what size the project is - small or large, our project
saving process is slow (seems to stop 1/2 way through). Even if the project
has 2 tasks in it, the response is bad.
