saving to "My Documents" corrupts document

hi-

i recently encountered a problem saving documents. when i save to the
'My Documents' folder, formatting info (bold, italic, etc) is lost and
a bunch of text (that looks like formatting information) is appended
to the end of the document. does anyone know what is going on and/or
how to fix this problem?

i am using Word 2000 and the OS is Windows 2000 Professional.
