Saving Word 97 Documents

Hi,

We have some users with Word 97 documents stored on a network drive
(connectivity is fine and the documents are accessible).

When they come to open them either by using windows explorer or the
word open file dialog they open fine, but when coming to save them the
'Save As' dialog is always displayed even though the file is not new,
also the title bar shows 'document 1' and not the documents name.

If you use the Word open file dialog it works ok (saving), however this
seems to be a bug but i cannot find any info on it currently.

The version is Office 97 and it's patched with SP2.

Thanks,

Julian.

Hi Julian,

If you're seeing the 'document 1' in the title bar immediately after opening the file then it would appear that Word is opening a
new document from the old one (i.e. treating it as a template). Do you get the same behavior if you copy the file to the local drive
and open it there?

If you right click on the file in Windows explorer is the default choice 'new' or 'open'?

Also, keep in mind that for Office 97 the updates are not resilient (Acmesetup based, rather than MSIExec). If you've run setup for
Office 97 to change features, for example, you may need to reapply the updates, but that shouldn't generally affect things in this
instance.
