Saving .xls as .xlsx creates folders with files in them

Every time I get a .xls file and open it in Excel 2008 and save it as a .xlsx file, I get a folder with subfolders and mysterious filenames in it created that has the same name as the filename plus the word Folder. What is this, can I delete it safely, and how do I stop it from happening?

I'll bet you have StuffIt Expander... I'll further bet you have it set to
automatically unzip files saved to a certain location [such as the
desktop]... And I'll even further bet you're saving your .xlsx files to that
same location.

To prevent it from happening the best solution is to learn to create folders
in which to store your files (the same thing will happen with any native
Office 2007/2008 file formats) rather than dumping everything onto the
desktop or some other singular location. There are a number of other reasons
for not storing user files on the desktop -- it isn't a folder & isn't
intended for that purpose.

Alternatively you can change your StuffIt preferences to turn off the
automatic feature or switch it to a different location. Better yet, update
the program to a more current version that recognizes the OXML file types.

What's happening is that OXML files are basically zipped folders & StuffIt
is unzipping them for you. That basically renders them useless.

Hi Bob,
Sure enough, I think that's the problem. I do have many folder hierarchies, but tend to download and unzip things on my desktop as it is where I am currently working. I clean it up every night. But the OXML files that Stuffit is unzipping or that are saved as .xlsx files on my desktop are not useless - in fact, I reuse and resave them over and over and they work fine - I just don't want that extra folder hanging out. Thanks for your help, I've reset my Stuffit preferences.
