says it published, but doesn't update?

Can you direct me to an article or thread that deals with
this? Here is the problem:
A friend moved my site off of Geocities and onto a paid
server as part of a barter deal. He re-designed my pages
and then I purchased FrontPage 2002 so I could make
changes using my Win98SE. I did my editing and then
published. It gave me a message saying the publish was
successful, but then when I go to my site, the changes are
not there. He's stumped and so am I.

Are you publishing to http://yourdomain.com ??

Is the local copy of your home page properly named for the server you are
using?? Check with the host and see what it should be. It usually requires the
html extension instead of just htm

Then rename your local copy and let FP update the hyperlinks to other pages.
The try publishing.

tried to do that, it refused to recognize my

(What is the definition of the word "web" in FP?) So
anyway, I published to the ftp numerical URL my friend had
given me, and it accepted the password, confirmed that
it's published, but who knows where.

since I'm doing the index page. I would use the ftml
extension if it would let me get that far.

How long has your new location been active??
Has your host, or have you set up the name servers at your new location. If so,
has it been at least 48 hours since they were
set up with your new IP address??

Hi Kathy,

I have the same problem too however from my experience if you give it a day
or two your updated version will appear. Not sure why but that's what mine
does anyway.

It's been a week. It looks like I should be able to publish to the ftp server which accepts my password, but maybe it's going to come down to a naming problem. One thing it is doing is saying that files such as "mainwebsite.html", "mainwebsite_cgi", "mail/ drafts", "/sent", "/trash" exist in my files but not on the server. Is this just a case of my guy not giving me enough info?

Meanwhile, can you answer my question as to the definition of the word "web"? I thought "a web" is an entire network like the www.

K

KathyW

hmmmm Krista, maybe that's why the guy's not returning my feverish midnight emails or my phone calls??? If that's true it'll be a relief, but it'll be durn inconvenient when I'm trying to update product lines on the spur of the mement.

S

Steve Easton

sounds more like you weren't sent the correct files.

Never heard of the files you mentioned in a FrontPage site.!!

You're not kidding, some of them are mail server files and the site does not include email service. I'll try to pummel the info out of him so I can take over my own darn site.

You must first get your new FP in synch with the server by publishing all
pages, overwriting those on the server, before you can publish changed pages
only. did you try that?

If you are re-directing the domain name, then you can not use the domain name to publish with, you
must use the IP address of the new server, and the FP extensions must be installed on this IP
Address.

Thank you, Mr. R, I did stumble on that, and I had a successful response using the ftp server URL for the publish. I just can't understand why the changes don't show. Is it, as Krista suggests, that it can take a day or so for the replacement pages to appear? I suppose that would be server-specific and not a FP problem. I'm going to wait 24 hours and see if my changes are there. If they show up, then I will think my buddy didn't give me such a great deal after all.

Kathy,

Don't use FTP as I believe that will wreck your FrontPage extensions on your
site. Instead, use the Publish Site command under the File menu in
FrontPage. Enter your website location (i.e., http://www.yourwebsite.com).
If you find that this does not work for you, your FrontPage extensions are
broken (which they may be if you have already used the FTP command) and
your host will have to reinstall them for you. (This is not as big of a
deal as it sounds - apparently this happens all the time).

Also, check with your host or applicable instructions for what you need to
name your home page before you upload to the server. For example, my host
states that my home page must be named index.html. In that case go to your
Folder List in FrontPage, right-click and rename your home site index.html
(FrontPage names it index.htm by default). But yours may be different than
mine depending on your host. Yours may state that your homepage be named
index.htm, default.htm, default.html, or maybe something else entirely.
Once you do that, and when using the Publish Site command is successful,
your website should update properly. Mine is weird - it sometimes takes a
whole day or two for it to update. Not sure why as I am new to designing
websites and working with FrontPage as of a month ago, but that has been my
experience so far. I feel your frustration!

HTH,

Krista

K

KathyW

Krista, I am going to paste your explanation into an email to the host and see what happens. Thanks.

Sorry Crash, I didn't mean to! I've learned so much from this newsgroup in

Yes, but Krista beat me to it.
