Scanned TIFF's appear w/ gray background after Saving

S

Shawn Hooton

I've scanned a document (report with text & graphics) to TIFF. Then inserted
the image(s) in a new Microsoft Word document (XP/2002-fully patched). They
print fine & I save/close Word.

I then open the document and print it - now the page shows a light gray
background where the image sits. You can see where the .13" white edge meets
the gray fill. The scanned images are 2 color (b&w) 600 dpi TIFF format.

I have tried the latest PCL6 and PS drivers with the following printers HP
LaserJet 8100DN and HP LaserJet 9050DN.

I hope someone can help me as this has become very frustrating.

Thanks.

In Tools>Options>Print, is there a check in the box for Drawing objects?
Depending on where the images were placed you may also need a check in the
box for Background Colors & Images.

Hi CyberTaz,

Thanks for the suggestion...

The Drawing objects box is checked. Where is "Background Colors & Images
box? I don't see it under Tools>Optioons>Print....

This article addresses the darkened .tiff.
"If you insert this image in another Microsoft Office 2003 program, such as
Microsoft Office Word 2003 or Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, the image appears
as expected. However, after you save the document, close it, and then reopen the
document, the image appears darker than it appeared originally"

Hi Mary,

I did see that, but our scanned TIFFs are in 2 colors (1 BitPerPixel).
Additionally, we are using Microsoft Word XP (2002).

I will try increasing the bit depth of the TIFF to 24-Bit RGB, but that
will increase the size of all of the TIFFs and the Word Documents by huge
amounts.

I increased the TIFF to 24-bits (16 million colors) and Insert=>Picture=>From
File. Then Saved, Exited, Reopened the Word Doc and printed it - Same gray
haze where the white part of the image should be.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Shawn,

How are you inserting the graphics into Word?

If you open one of the TIFF files with http://irfanview.com
and use Image=>Information what is the color depth and count
shown? Do you also see a 'grey' there if you use 'enter' to
display it without the Irfanview background?

Hi Bob,

In Irfanview, the Original, Current, & Unique Colors all are "2 (1
BitsPerPixel)"

I hit the [Enter] Key and the image is still just a white page with black
text on it. There is no grey, just black & white.

To throw another wrench in this whole deal...I just printed the Word
Documents on our Imagististics im6530 Printer/Copier/Scanner and their isn't
any grey. This is the device that I originally scanned the documents on.

Perhaps I should contact HP because of the issue seems to happen on their
printers?

Correction - There is a very, very light hint of grey on the Imagistics print
job.

I guess that shoots the HP idea down...back to Microsoft, I guess.
