Often when I scan into Word, the image is split lengthways with the right side appearing on the left and vice versa. This usually happens on the second page of a multi paged scan. I use page break to separate pages. This does not always happen so it is hard to track down a solution
I have had this on three different brand scanners with three different versions of scanning software. I think this points to Word and how it is handling the image.
