scanpst.exe program will not run.

I have Outlook 2007 and when I try to download emails, delete emails, move
emails... anything... I get an error that says the Outlook.pst file is busy
and cannot be accessed.

The message tells me to run scanpst.exe

When I run that program, I get a message that says it cannot find the
scanpst.dll file.

That is where I am lost. I have done everything to try and find that file.
I have tried to back-up Outlook. I have tried to restore from an older
back-up. I am still stuck.

ANyone have a solution to how I can get the scanpst.exe file to run?

There isnt a 'scanpst.dll' file
Scanpst,exe is usually located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
The file icon looks like a 'torn envelope'
Locate the file via Explorer and double click the icon (With Outlook closed)
Or search to include hidden

I have found the scanpst.exe program with no problem. But when I run it, a
message pops up that says:, "This application has failed to start because
scnpst64.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the
problem."

Sorry. It was scnpst64.dll that it says is missing.

What are my options? Any way to locate that file??

Try;
Run Office diagnostics
And Run MS Update

No luck with Office Diagnostics. That is the 2nd time I have run that
program and everything checks out.

I have run Windows update. Is that the MS Update or is MS Update something
else?

C

Chuck Jennings

I ran the update that is under the Help option in Outlook. Same as Windows
update.

Any option out there for recovering this scnpst64.dll file?

D

DL

scnpst64.dll was included in an MS Update, in I believe April 2009,
allthough this was an update to an older version.
The latest version of that file being 12.0.6504.5000
The file should be located inProgram Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
If there is no such file I would have expected Office Diagnostics to
repair/reinstall that file

DL,

I appreciate your help so far.

Apparently when I ran those programs you recommended, it recovered the .dll
file needed.

I have since run the scanpst.exe program a number of times, but the file is
not repairing. The program recognizes that there is an error and it says
that it is repairing the file, but the problem still persists.

Basically, I cannot make any changes to the .pst file as Outlook still shows
the .pst file is in use and cannot be accessed.

Please tell me what you recommend next.

Hey buddy,
It seems that your Scanpst.exe is corrupted. I am saying this becaus
using Scanpst.exe is most simplest thing to do and if you have proble
with this then definately your Scanpst.exe is corrupted.

But don't worry, I has a very easy solution. Just vist '*Downloa
Scanpst.exe*' (http://www.inboxrepair-tool.com/scanpst-exe.php) site an
your problem will be solved. Trust me it really works. try it.

Thanks

You ran scanpst.exe when Outlook was closed?
It completed, giving a msg result that the repair was successful?

How or where are you getting the msg that the pst is in use?

C

Chuck Jennings

I ran scanpst when it was closed.

When I run Outlook and try to download emails, nothing comes to the Inbox.
When I go to check the messages through my web portal, it shows they are
read. So Outlook is accessing the mail, but it can't complete the download.
The error message is that is cannot access the Outlook.pst file because it is
already in use. Let me get the exact error message and type it here for you.

In the details box, it reads, "Task (email address) reported error
(0x9EE40600): 'The file C;|blahblahblah\Outlook.pst is in use and cannot be
accessed. Close any application that is using this file, and then try again.
You might need to restart your computer.'

I also cannot delete emails or move emails. Basically, I am locked into
what was there on Thursday night before the problems started. None of the
RSS feeds will download either.

I either need to fix this pst file, or just start from scratch. I do not
know how to delete this pst file and start from scratch though.

I have tried restoring a pst file that I created as a backup a few months
ago with no luck. Shoudl I take that file and just copy it over the
Outlook.pst file? renaming it?

But you fail to say whether scanpst ran successfully and reported 'what'

Start outlook using the safe switch
Start> Run
outlook.exe /safe (NB space between exe /)

C

Chuck Jennings

OK. I ran the safe mode. It said, "...Cannot start Outlook. Cannot open
the Outlook Window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors are
detected in the file ...Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled
applications, and use the Inbox repair tool."

OK, I am re-running the scanpst.exe program.

It reports, "No errors were found in the file."

Re-tried running Outlook in safe mode with the same results.

Re-tried Outlook also with same results.

Use the mail applet in the Control Panel to create a new profile, add a new
data file, add the accounts and test

C

Chuck Jennings

Thanks DL. I did that and it is working.

I was able to do a .pst backup of my contacts and my inbox. Some of the
subfolders in the inbox were corrupted and I will not be able to move them
over, but I am saving alot.

Thanks. I didn't know how to set up a new profile. Much better than
reinstalling and losing everything which is what I thought I was going to
have to do.

I appreicate the help.

An uninstall/reinstall of Outlook has no impact on data, or the outlook
Profile. Niether does it usually do anything more than Office Diagnostics or
a repair would do
