scansoft pdf

When I use Microsoft word these scansoft pdf things pop into the tool bar
area. The only way to get them off the tool bar is to uncheck each one.

What are these things? Do I need them? If not, is there a way to stop them

Add-ins installed by the scansoft software, most likely.
Do I need them?

What do they do? Do you need that done? If not, then you probably don't need
them.

On the other hand, if they're not getting in the way and you think you might
need them, it might be best to leave them be for now.
If not, is there a way to stop them

Does Scansoft have a forum or help site? I'd check there first.
You may be able to uninstall just the bits that interact with Word.
