Scrambled Document in Word 2002

Problem: Microsoft Word 2002 has twice scrambled a long
57 page document, scattering sentences from different
parts of the document randomly throughout it.

When I View Hidden Files in the folder where this
document is located, I see that there are a large number
of temporary files duplicating the document, as many as a
couple dozen per day, many only 1 or 2 minutes apart.

The Save options I have configured for Word are "Allow
Background Saves" and "Save Auto-Recovery info every 10
minutes." "Embed Linguistic Data" and "Embed Smart Tags"
are also checked.

The document itself has an unusual history. It consists
of parts of several dozen small documents transferred
over from my old 1994 Macintosh. They were originally
created in Clarisworks 2.1 for Macintosh. The files were
transferred over by 1) saving onto floppy in Macintosh,
opened on my new Dell Dimension 2400 PC in Word 2002
using "Recover Text From Any File" and then Saved As Word
document; or 2) emailed from Macintosh, then email text
picked up and saved in Dell PC as Word Document. Most of
the transfers were done by email.

These document fragments were then cut and pasted into a
single long document, which has since been edited
extensively. It appears that the scrambling takes place
only in those sections of the document which I have
edited extensively. Portions of the document which
remain largely unedited fragments transferred over do not
appear to get scrambled. One anomaly I have noticed is
that "Show/Hide Formatting" reveals Paragraph marks at
the end of every line in the unedited, transferred
portions of the document.

The first time the document scrambled a couple weeks ago,
I was able to recover most of the original integrity by
opening up one of the many Temporary Files created by
Word that day. However, everything scrambled again
yesterday.

I have had no similar problem (so far!!)in any other
document, either created on this machine or transferred
from my old Mac and edited on this machine. Nor have I
found evidence of a large amount of temporary files
created by Word in any other folder. The scrambling
seems thus far confined to this long document combined
from dozens of transferred documents, while the creation
of many temporary files seems to be confined to the
folder in which it is located.

Help! I can't trust working on this machine until this
issue is resolved.

Well, you need to edit this document correctly. You need to remove all empty
paragraphs, remove all direct formatting, use styles throughout and remove
those end of line Paragraphs Marks. The longer the document becomes and the
more direct formatting you apply, the more corrupt the document will become.
