screen now shows symbolsfor paragraphs, spaces etc

all of a sudden when I type a document the screen shows the symbols for
spaces, paragraphs etc. How do I make them go away? Thanks

Up on the toolbar -- there is a button that looks like a backward P -- poise
your cursor over it and the tool tip shows the name as Show/Hide -- click on
it! It is a toggle button -- either it is on or it is off -- when it is
ON -- it shows you some of the "formatting detail".
