Search and replace quirks with change tracking on

Hi,

:: MS-Word 97 SR-2

I have done extensive revisions of a doc under config_control, so all
deletions must be retained in the doc.

On several occasions I replaced whole paragraphs, but ended up with a
double ".." at the end of each sentence, since my inserted text had
its own '.' and I did not delete the '.' at the end of the deleted
paragraph (I now know to kill this '.' everytime). However it has
exposed the following bugs in change tracking :

1) To find the ".." I have to switch change "Display changes" off
[Tools [Track changes [Highlight Changes {highlight changes on
Screen -> OFF} ]]

Even then finding all the ".." is not very thorough, several of them
are missed.
Why should this be so?

2) If I then replace ".." with ".", all the deleted text between my
newly inserted '.' and the old '.' is removed from the doc and not
left as deleted text. This is a major disaster.

Any advice on repairing the docs that have now inherited a multitude
of ..'s ?

Paul.
