Hi,

We are using MS Project 2003 Standard Desktop and have deployed a central
Global.mpt in a
shared directory on the network.

This works OK however if the user is using a notebook and disconnects from
the Network then MS Project advises that it is unable to open the Global.mpt
and prevents MS Project from starting. This is the case even though we have
set the first and second registry key as per below. It appears that even
though we have set the second registry key permission to keep searching for
a Global.mpt file that MS Project does not continue to look for the file and
instead gives an error message.

We have documentation for MS Project 2002 as per below and this is what we
have followed however it appears that this has changed in MS Project 2003.
We are unable to find any documentation on the Global.mpt for MS Project
2003.

Is anyone able to tell us what we need to do to get this to work or at least
point us to where we can find documentation for MS Project 2003 on this.

Thanks greatly. Steve.

Searching for the Global.mpt
First Microsoft Project looks at the following registry key to see if there
is a designated location for the Global.mpt. Usually this key would be set
as part of a system policy, as stated above under System Policies.

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\10.0\MS Project\GlobalSearch\
RootKey

If Microsoft Project cannot find a global template at the location specified
in the above registry key, Microsoft Project looks for the existence of the
second key.

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\10.0\MSProject\GlobalSearch\
Permission to determine if the search should continue

If Microsoft Project 2002 cannot find a global template from the above, it
will look in the following locations in the following order:

1. Current directory. If found, Microsoft Project will try to boot
using this global.

2. User Profile LCID folder. For example: c:\Documents and
Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\10\1033.

3. WINPROJ.EXE directory. The directory that contains WINPROJ.EXE for
example c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10.

If a global template still cannot be found, Microsoft Project will call on
Windows Installer to install a new global template. If the Windows Installer
cannot complete the installation, then Microsoft Project 2002 reports that a
Global.mpt file cannot be found and uses default settings.
