search telephone numbers in outlook 2007

K

Krissy

I have posted this question before but no one seems to know the answer. I
cant believe nobody has a solution.

Previous post =

I cant seem to search for telephone numbers which have been typed into an
appointment.

Particularly once they have been altered into a hyperlink ie when you type
tel:0111122223 followed by either a space or return in an appointment the
number turns blue and underlined and gets altered to a hyperlink.

But the numbers become invisible in search - even using the advanced search
criteria?

Can telephone numbers / hyperlinks be searched? you could search for tel
No's in earlier versions of outlook what am I doing wrong.

Thank you

KC

Search in 2007 searches the beginning of words so you need to search for
Tel: plus however many numbers you need.

Diane,
In my Office Outlook 2007, each telephone number is proceded with; Home:,
Business:, Mobile:, etc. None, including, "Tel: (702) nnn-nnn" can be found.

I have typed the following formats to no avail(number faked): Home: (702)
555-1212
Business: 1-800-555-1212
Mobile: (702) 555-1212
Home: 555-1212
Tel: 555-1212
Tel: 1-800-555-1212

None bring results.

How would you search for part of a number. ie if you only knew part of the
telephone number (and that part could be in the middle or the end)

Charles,

This is concerning searching a telephone number which has been inputed into
an appointment, not a contact. Open an appointment then type tel:000000 or
whatever number you wish, then (crucially) hit space or return and the
number is converted to a hyperlink which if you then click it and have a
modem conected will call the number.

She's looking in the notes field, not the phone # fields.

in 2007, expand the search box using the chevrons and enter the number in
the field you want to search in.

It will find text numbers not converted to hyperlink but it says 'there are
no items to show in this view' if you try advanced search for part of a
converted tel No. It will find the full number, but if I knew that then I
wouldnt need to search!

Previous versions searched anywhere in the text - windows desktop search
does the beginning of the word.

if you know the area code, you can use instant search - the colon after Tel
identifies the numbers as a new word for search. If you don't know the area
code or have too many in that area code to 'eye ball' for the right one,
you'll need to use advanced find.

In Advanced find, you need to use the advanced tab - search the Message
field for the partial text. I don't know why the subject and notes or
frequently used fields searches don't search the message field.

In the future when you create the telephony links, include the number (as a
second entry) in 202-234-5678 format in the body so search works.
Tel:202-234-5678 converts to a hyperlink - does you dialer work with it?
(Dots also hyperlink but my test searches didn't find the last 4 when I used
numbers).

Using advanced find works if I choose the 'advanced tab' and pick 'define
more criteria' then 'frequently used fields' then 'message' then 'add' then
type in the part number that I want to search.

So at least I can get the info I need, for which I thank you.

It just seems so complicated, it's as though we have made things harder with
this Office update rather than easier. (presumably if I had the time I could
automate this task using a bit of VBA code? would that be possible? are the
search operations visible as objects in visual basic?)

Many thanks again

I don't know about VBA - but it used to be that you could save advanced
searches but security fixes killed that.

If I know the field name, I just type it in the dialog to save a few steps.

If the dialer ignores dashes, I would get in the habit of putting the
numbers in with dashes so Instant search works on partials.
