Searching in 207

Two days ago I installed OneNote 2007 beta 2, Office 2007 beta 2 and Desktop
Search 3.0 beta. Searching Outlook 2007 is fine - fast in fact - but not so
with One Note.
If I enter a search word it will only be found if it is on a page that is
open. It will not find the word on other any other page even though it
appears on many pages. If the open page does not contain the search term, a
box pops up to say that the word cannot be found. Any suggestions?

Hi Davros,

Did you leave OneNote during that time? Indexing only happens if OneNote
is open.

Yes, the computer has been on and with OneNote running for at least 48 hours.
As I said, searches in Outlook 2007 are very fast and so I presume that
Windows Desktop Search is working. It just looks as though my OneNote
notebooks have not been indexed.

Really love the new version, but since my note book has been converted and I
can't use OneNote 2003 I am in trouble if I can't search.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Davros,

How big is your notebook?
You should reboot your computer, open only OneNote (and not Outlook) and
see what happens after a few hours. My own notebook is around 250 MB and
leaving ON open for 7 hrs worked well. After that the indexing was done.
If that doesn't work, you can try and see if you can force OneNote to
use non-WDS indexing. To try this (and I mean trying, I haven't done
this myself), set the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other\EnableWDSIndexing
= 0

Thanks for the response,

The notebook concerned is only about 9Mb.
I tried the "reboot and only open OneNote" idea but no luck.

I am a bit reluctant to alter the registry as presumably it is WDS that is
doing such a good job of searching Outlook.

I have no idea how OneNote searches. It will search for a word on any page
that is open at the time and will find it quickly, but it will simply not
search for the word on any other pages. Does that mean that WDS is doing the
search and that something else is wrong?

Could Copernic desktop search cause a conflict?

Would be pleased to hear any other suggestions.

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem, all my previous noteflags from the 2003
converted notebook, and all new ones, were not found in a note flag summary.
only the current section and page (no subpages...)

After the registy entry the note-flag summary was instantly there as it was
in 2003.

Sorry to be a bit thick. Not used to editing the registry.
Am I supposed to find an entry which reads
"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other\EnableWDSIndexing"
and then add "=0", because there is no such entry in my registry.
Or, am I supposed to type in the whole string?

Hi,

I am sure others here can give better instructions, but this is what I did:

- Open RegEdit.exe and navigate using the tree structure on the left to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other\

- Here I has several entries visible on the right such as
"DefaultNoteFlag","DefaultOutlookTask" ...

-If you cannot see an entry called " EnableWDSIndexing" you can create it :
right click on that window and select "new->DWORD" you can create a new
DWORD entry, rename this from "new Entry #1" to "EnableWDSIndexing" this will
create the entry you need.

- Once you have created/found this entry, double click to get the
opportunity to change the value to 0 or 1, whichever you desire..

I must add that if this seems daunting, don't do it - Bad Things can happen
if you break the registry....!

Thanks Morsey and Patrick,

I now have an entry which reads

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other\EnableWDSIndexing = 0"

and I have rebooted, but I can still ONLY find words or flags that are on
the page that is open when I invoke the search command.

Any other suggestions?

You could try getting rid of the registry entry again and giving WDS
another chance. If it doesn't work, file a bug.
Worst case, revert back to OneNote 2003 using the backups of your
notebooks you made before you installed 2007. It's beta software and
bugs happen. If you use beta software for anything mission critical and
a particular functionality is broken and hinders your work, then that is
honestly your problem. When you installed the beta, you took this risk
knowing that things could go wrong and you'd have to leave with these
issues until they can be fixed (either directly, workaround or with a
newer build).

Are you sure that entry is correct?
The value should be a DWORD and you should not have the = in it?

D

Patrick,

Thank you, it now works well.

You may have assumed too much knowledge when you wrote
"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\OneNote\Options\Other\EnableWDSIndexing = 0"

I took it literally and typed "= 0" at the end of the registry entry, rather
than set it as a hexadecimal value of zero.

Anyway, thank you for the lecture on the potential problems with beta
software, although I am ot sure what promted it as I was only asking for help.

Kind regards.

Hi Davros,

Sorry about the lecture. I didn't read the post where you said you
didn't know how to edit the registry after I posted it. I assumed
therefore incorrectly that you are one of many users who just get Office
Beta and assume it is something like the beta versions brought forth by
Google or some smaller MS stuff (Windows Defender, etc) where the label
"beta" is often times not more than a marketing label. In contrast the
Office Beta versions are real betas with lots of issues.
For example, I can't leave OneNote on my tablet open when I am at home
and connected to my desktop. Due to a bug in how OneNote deals with
Windows Offline Files and syncing, my CPU usage goes to 100%, all file
access to any files that might be held offline (My Documents in my case)
is blocked and even my desktop is impacted. It's a nasty bug that the
developer responsible for it has been trying to squash since Beta 1
Technical Refresh, but so far without luck.

Creating this registry key and setting it to '0' solved a problem I was
having when my Note Flags summaries weren't working correctly.

Many thanks.
