Searching

Is there a way to search for text in a visio *.vsd without
opening it first. Our company has hundreds of visio *.vsd
and I would like to search an entire directory without
opening each document.

Thanks a million.

I think that only the File > Properties are searchable (Author, Company,
Description, Keywords, etc.) via the file system (anybody out there 100%
sure?) So you'd have to pray that the creators of the files wrote in nice
descriptions (yeah, right!)

Also, since Visio 2002, you can save Visio files as .VDX format, which is an
xml representaion of the file. This would be more searchable in the way that
you wish. Of course you'd have to have Visio 2002, and you'd have to batch
convert all the files to the xml format...

Hope this helps,

Just use the file search option of Windows, where you enter "*.vsd" as
filename and "yourtext" into the contains-text-field.

This does NOT work for alphanumeric text. It usually
works for strictly alpha or numeric but not combinations.

Bug in the product.

Works fine also with alphanumeric strings (e.g. "f15xz6a").
No bug in my VISIO.
