section break blank pages

I have a large document (book manuscript) that I want to
break into sections (by chapter) so that I can have
differnt headers for each chapter. When I insert
a "section break next page" a blank page is inserted
between the end of one chapter and the beginning of the
next. It prints out (blank) and shows up in print preview
as well. The first paragraph of the chapter is not set
to "page break before".

I've tried inserting a hard page break at the end of a
chapter, and then a "continuous section break" at the
beginning of the next chapter. This eliminates the blank
page, but then the header of the first page of the next
chapter is part of the previous section.

I want each chapter to be a separate section, so that I
can have different odd and even headers, with a different
header for the first page of each section (basically no
header on the title page of each chapter). How can I do
this without the blank pages?

Brian,

I think this could be due to the page layout options that you are using.
Does this happen between every section break or just section breaks inserted
on odd numbered pages? For example, if you end chapter 1 on page 9 you
obviously don't want chapter 2 starting on even page 10. If the text in the
old section ends on an odd page and the new section start is set to "Odd
page," Word inserts the blank sheet as a place holder for the back of
previous section odd page.

Are you sure you selected a "Next page" break and not "Odd page"? The
behavior you describe is usually the result of an Odd Page or Even Page
section break: Word inserts an extra, entirely blank page when the previous
section ends on an odd page (for Odd Page breaks). If the page is completely
blank and you don't see it in Print Layout view (or even in Print Preview
unless you display two pages at a time), then that's what's happening. If
the page is blank except for a header/footer/page number, then it is not
truly empty but in fact contains an empty paragraph or some other
nonprinting content.

I'm using "break next page", not "odd" or "even". At this
point I don't care if a chapter starts on an even page. I
could fix that simply be inserting a hard page break
before the section break, and putting a pertinent quote
on the new even page to keep it from being blank. I would
just like my section breaks to start a new chapter, and
not have a blank page between chapters. The blank page
shows up in Print Preview, yet when looking at the codes,
I "arrow" right past it, because there is nothing there.

I'm not using "odd page", and the blank page is viewable
in Print Preview. I can't zoom in Print Preview, because
there is nothing to zoom in on. When I look at the codes,
I "arrow" from the section break to the first code (or
character) of the next chapter, right past the blank
page. I can't even insert anything in the blank page.
this throw off my page numbering and my odd and even
headers.

Are you restarting page numbering a "1" for your chapters? If so, and if you
have used mirror margins or different odd and even, then Word assumes this
should be on a 'recto' page. Section breaks behave as if they were 'New Odd
Page" in this case.

I'm manually starting the page numbers where the previous
chapter left off. Can I use "continue from previous
section" if I have deselected the "same as previous"
function for the header itself?

Yes. Continuing or restarting page numbering is independent of "Same as
Previous" in headers and footers (which is itself independent for individual
headers and footers; for example, you can have the headers linked and the
footers not, or the First Page Headers linked and the Headers not).
