Section breaks created from headings

Using Word 2003.

Word should be able to automatically create section breaks based on heading
styles. For example, there should be an option to create a section break
before every Heading 1. This saves on manually creating section breaks in
long documents, such as books, for which users might want different
headers/footers for each chapter.

The idea of a "Section break before" property similar to the "Page break
before" property has been mooted, but the problem is: What kind of section
break should it be? Presumably some kind of "next page" (rather than
Continuous), but should it be Next Page, Odd Page, Even Page? It gets
complicated.

FWIW, you don't need section breaks to have different headers or footers for
a given heading; for this you can use the StyleRef field (see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm). What you do need a section
break for is an empty header/footer on the first page of the chapter, for
which you need the First Page Header/Footer. I just completed a book with
50+ chapters (some of them only one or two pages long), and I guarantee that
some sort of "Section break before" property would have been a definite
boon. I do use a StyleRef field to pick up the chapter title, though, so I
don't have to unlink the corresponding headers (I put the author's name in
the Even Page Header and chapter title in the Odd Page Header).

Thanks for the tip about the StyleRef field, Suzanne. I didn't know of its
existence heretofore. =)

It's very handy. Even when you do need section breaks between chapters
(because you want a different--or no--header or footer on the first page of
a chapter), it still saves you from having to unlink the headers/footers and
create new ones in each chapter.
