Section Numbering Reset

Jeremy Goff

I have a document with Outline numbering, e.g.:

Heading 1
Heading 1.1
Heading 1.1.1
Heading 1.1.2
Heading 1.2
Heading 1.2.1
Heading 1.2.2
----------------------------------section break
Heading 2
Heading 2.1
Heading 2.1.1
Heading 2.1.2
Heading 2.2
Heading 2.2.1
Heading 2.2.2

I mail merge data to produce a number of documents, the problem is the
result is:

Heading 1
Heading 1.1
Heading 1.1.1
Heading 1.1.2
Heading 1.2
Heading 1.2.1
Heading 1.2.2
----------------------------------section break
Heading 1
Heading 1.1
Heading 1.1.1
Heading 1.1.2
Heading 1.2
Heading 1.2.1
Heading 1.2.2

Hope you spotted it! The Section Break in the output document seems to cause
the numbering to reset.

Of course if there are more than one documents in the output then these are
split by Section Breaks where the numbering should be reset (for each
document).

Hope this is clear, TIA for any ideas.

I believe the 'normal' mail merge both inserts a section break and restarts
numbering between 'documents' - I guess it must do this a kludgy way by
restarting numbering on every section break, whether or not that's a
'between document' one or not.

I think you can work around this either by using the 'Catalog' form of mail
merge (and including a page break at the end of your main document, since
you won't get generated section break) or by finding a way to remove the
section breaks from your main document.

Thank you Margaret, you understood my problem exactly.
I have tried the 'Catalog' output form and can work with that, I'll try
adding a pagebreak at the end as well.

I found that by deleting the sectionbreak in my 'Form Letters' output, the
numbering of course became correct.
If I then inserted a sectionbreak it again restarted the numbering!
Is there an option in sectionbreaks to do this, vis-a-vis an option to turn
it off?
