Section numbering

I know about the field code for SECTIONPAGES, but the problem is the PAGE
field. Within a five-page section that starts on the eighth page of the
document I get:
etc.

I am using Word 2003. I have searched for postings on this topic, but the
only information I have seen is about the SECTIONPAGES part. It seems
everybody but me has the PAGE value restart from 1 at the beginning of a
section.

Hi BruceM,

You can have the PAGE field start from whatever number you want. When in the footer, simply choose the page number formatting button
and use that to set the starting number.

The page number is neither in the header or footer, which are the only two
options allowed by Insert >> Page Numbers. As far as I can tell I do not
have the option of selecting the starting page number if the numbering is in
the body of the document. In any case, I thought it was possible to restart
page numbering for a new section. I can choose the total number of section
pages, so I should be able to select the page number within the section.
Page 8 of 5 is useless to me, as I expect it would be to everybody.

Page number restarts apply to sections, no matter where the PAGE field is
located. Just use the Page Number Format dialog box to specify the desired
starting number. And you can open the dialog by clicking the Format Page
Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

OK, thanks. I thought since the button was in the header/footer toolbar the
page number had to be in the header or footer. Same for the Insert >> Page
Numbers menu selection. I didn't realize it would work no matter where the
PAGE field is located, and I never thought to give it a try. It seems to be
doing what it should now.
Thanks again.
