section without a section break?

S

Steve Russell

My page numbers have stopped on a page whose header shows this:

Header - Section 2 - .

Up to this point, it is Section 1. I did have some sections inserted, but I
have removed them.

What is causing this confusion? I don't want a break of any sort!

Thanks!

Search for ^b and replace with nothing.

Apparently, I did have a break in there and did delete it after my post. I
can hardly believe how difficult Word is. But now this question, please:

I have started a new section, with my page numbers continuing in the header,
so that's okay. But my footer, which is a marker for notes, needs to
disappear at this point. How can I accomplish this? It seems obvious, but
I keep getting in trouble.

Plus, the footer on the first page of this new section becomes invisible,
with all pages thereafter showing that same text in the footer that I don't
want. What's up?

Thanks again.

After deleting the footer's content in the SECOND page of the new section, I
have finally succeeded in removing the footer for the rest of the section.
WHY would I have to do this? Why wouldn't removing the footer on the first
page of the new section give me the same results? Does it have to do with
using mirror margins and using "half" pages?

You're right. Thanks.

Back to the first page, I cannot seem to hide the zero (0) page number, even
with "Show Number on First Page" unchecked. Any suggestion?

The page number is in your First Page Header/Footer, and you can delete it
from there. Since you seem to have used Insert | Page Numbers to insert it,
be sure you get the frame as well as the PAGE field. For instructions, see
http://home.zebra.net/~sbarnhill/WanderingFrame.htm.

If you find that deleting the page number from the First Page Header/Footer
deletes it from the rest of the document (though I suspect it won't), use
the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar to insert the
page number directly in the Header/Footer, using paragraph formatting or the
built-in tab stops to position it.

Suzanne, You're right again! My pain is decreasing. . . .

How about page 1 -- can I remove its page number? Will that require a
section break?

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

Well, if you start with page 0 and don't want a number on page 1, then it's
time to rethink the document structure. You could insert a section break
after page 1, but it would make more sense to insert one after page 0 (the
title page?). I might be able to decrease your pain a bit more by pointing
out that a title page is conventionally page 1, but if you want to start
numbering with the next page, then the trick is to set the starting number
back from 0 to 1, then insert a Next Page break between pages 1 and 2 (2
will become a second 1). If you leave "Different first page" and "Same As
Previous" in effect, you'll automatically have no page number on page 1 of
Section 2 because it will have a First Page Header/Footer that is the same
as the one in Section 1.

It's probably a bit late now, but I think you'd probably benefit from
reading http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm.

Using mirror margins, my title page becomes page number 1, but the document
begins with page 0, on the left.

What is on page 0? A frontispiece? Will there be a half-title page? The
frontispiece is usually on the back of that. If page 0 is blank, you can
delete it. When you have "Mirror margins" selected, Word will always make 1
a recto page.
