Microsoft Office 2000.
When I type a longer document, on the bottom tray I see, next to the page
number, a Section number generated by the program. How is it generated?
What is it and what is the use/purpose?

You get a section when you : Insert, Break, Section. The best use for
sections is for using different text in different headers OR to use
landscape and portrait pages in the same document. Without sections you
can't do either.
