Security in Project Server 2002

Gerald

When we installed Project Server 2002, the project managers had the ability
to create/delete projects in the system, however we discouraged it. Instead
we tried to put a process in place that would keep them from having to. This
process is not working and now I need to lock down the system, but I don't
remember where I need to make the change. Can someone help?

Thanks.

Are you using Project Server 2002 or 2003? The reason that I ask is in
2002, I do not believe that project managers have default permission to
delete a project, and only have default permission to create new projects.
In Project Server 2003, project managers have default permissions to create
new projects and to delete projects. In either situation, you should remove
any project managers from the Administrators group if you have included them
in this Group.

To remove the create project permission in 2002, do the following:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions
2. Click the Admin menu
3. Click the Manage users and groups link
4. Click the Groups link in the sidepane
5. Select the Project Managers group and click the Modify Group button
6. Deselect the Allow setting for the New Project permission (both Allow
or Deny are unchecked)
7. Click the Save Changes button

If you are using Project Server 2003, you can remove both permissions by
completing the following steps:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions
2. Click the Admin menu
3. Click the Manage users and groups link
4. Click the Groups link in the sidepane
5. Select the Project Managers group and click the Modify Group button
6. In the Categories section, select the My Projects category
7. In the Permissions grid of the Categories section, deselect the Allow
setting for the Delete Project permission (both Allow or Deny are unchecked)
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for each Category to which the Project Managers
group has access
9. Deselect the Allow setting for the New Project permission
10. Click the Save Changes button

Please be aware that changing the New Project permission may have other
consequences that will complicate your situation further. You will need to
experiment with the removal of this permission to know for sure. Hope this
helps.
