Microsoft Word 2003
Issues with cross-reference entries in back-of-book indexes. How can I get
Word to solve these problems?
Example follows this issues list:
1. See also cross-references do not sort in alphabetical order.
I could manually sort them together separated by semicolons in one
cross-reference, but that's a significant maintenance issue that the software
should manage, especially in a large, technically dense book. Word software
should free writers/indexers from time eaters like this to do more productive
work.
2. Word does not eliminate a duplicate cross-reference. See duplicate Evac
cross-reference in example.
3. Each See and See also cross-reference should be on separate line under
to primary entry. (Easier to
read/reference, because there's less text wrapping.)
4. See and See also cross-references should not be bolded. (Makes index
easier to read/reference.)
I've been a writer/editor/indexer in high tech for over 30 years, where I
used other tools that provided these features. Now I'm using Word to write
technically dense documentation in a one-writer shop, and I need to make the
most of Word features.
