Select vs insertion point

I feel really dumb today. I am working in outline mode, and every time I
click the mouse the adjoining paragraph is selected. I want an insertion
point so that I can add text! The help function tells me to hit ESC but that
has no effect. I know that I am missing something obvious, but what??
