Selecting rows or columns at warp 6!!

Some times when I am selecting a range of rows (1-???), or a range of
columns (A-??), instead of it proceeding very slowly, and controllable,
as it usually does, it goes warp 6, and before I know it, I am at row
1200, or column AA, when what I wanted was row 60, or column R. (for
instance). There doesn't seem to be any logic behind it, but it is
really honks me off.

I am using WIN 98SE, and Office 98

As always any help is appreciated

Drag very carefully. When the page starts scrolling, don't drag much
farther, or you get to warp speed. There is a range within which you
can scroll faster but still controllably, but it takes practice to find
it.

I wish there was a maximum scroll speed, myself.

I find the speed more controllable when using the keyboard page up or
page down. Just hold the shift key down.

Good point, Bucky. That also works with the arrow keys, which also
work from left to right. Again, holding down the Shift key.

My original reply assumed copying a formula across a number of cells by
dragging. Unless I'm missing something, in that case one still has to
be careful to not drag too far and end up several dozens of columns (or
hundreds of rows) past where one intends to be.

On the other hand, Bucky's PageUp/PageDown or my Arrow key methods are
good for simply selecting cells.

You can still do that with the keyboard. After "dragging" using shift +
arrows or page up/down, then type "Ctrl+D" to fill down or "Ctrl+R" to
fill right.

Another good point; I had (obviously) forgotten about those. Thanks
for reminding me! :)
