Selecting "Symbol" crashes Word

Ron

I was told by Microsoft that having two HP printers driver
software loaded on my laptop (one in office, one at home)
was causing a clash that threw me out of Word as soon as I
selected [symbol].
I de-installed the HP G85 at home, installed a "generic"
driver - and Word worked.
I've put up with this for some time but now I have to use
symbols.
I bought a Canon MP730 printer, uninstalled ALL HP
drivers - and still I get thrown out of Word.

I'm getting desperate for a solution!

I hate to differ with MS, but this is just plain garbage. There is no reason
why switching between printer drivers would cause Word to hang (users do
this all the time; I routinely switch between drivers on the same machine).
Yes, you may get some reformatting (see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm), but not errors.
The problem might be caused by not having the needed fonts installed, but
even that should not hang Word (though I believe there is a known problem
with having PS Symbol installed without a corresponding TrueType version).
What *will* hang Word is having no printer driver or a damaged one selected
as the default. If you have a brand-new printer with new drivers and are
still getting this problem, I would look elsewhere for the solution. Try the
troubleshooting tips at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Also, don't
overlook the possibility that the display driver might be at fault.
