selecting the most recent date

I have an employee database that tracks, among other things, promotion,
transfer and reassignment dates. I have allowed for 9 promotion/transfer/
reassignment events in the database. For various reasons,
some PTRs will change an employee's annual evaluation date and some will not.
I'm using a yes/no checkbox as a field to flag those PTR dates that will
change the evaluation date. How do I tell the database to use the most
recent of the 9 dates associated with the yes/no box as the adjusted
evaluation date, and if there is no PTR yes/no, to use the original hire date?

Any support you can give will be appreciated. Thank you.
