send and receive automatically

i'm looking to receive messages while microsoft office is not open and
placing an icon in my toolbar alerting me to new mail. how can i do this

in outlook express, the program does not have to be open to send and receive.
an icon shows up in the toolbar when new mail is received to alert you. i was
curious is this is possible with outlook 2002
