Send/Receive Freezes when Autotext added to mail body

I am using a corporate licensed version of Outlook 2002,
version 10, build 5709.
When replying to mails where I embed autotext, the
send/receives freezes. The same mail sends OK when there
is no autotext added.
Clearly the simple answer is don't embed autotext, any
other ideas?
