Send/Receive 'invisible' messages

Every third or fourth 'send receive' Outlook shows a message being sent, yet
I haven't written one. It isn't shown in the sent box like the ones I have
written yet it is also 'cleaned' by Norton Antivirus as are all known written
messages. I have the following protection on my computer: Spybot - search
destroy, Ad-aware, Norton Antivirus 2005 with updates and Zonealarm all
running and nothing untoward is reportedly on my hardrives etc.
Can anyone suggest what these 'invisible' messages are and how I can prevent
them - also, where are they going?

What version of Outlook are you using? These could be read receipts that
people have requested from you.

Outlook XP. If they are receipts they are ones automatically sent that I
can't view anywhere or ones where I don't see a dialogue box requesting them.
I do ocassionally have a dialogue box appear asking if I want to send a read
receipt but these doesn't show on the send/receive box and aren't normally
picked up by Norton.

Thanks for your reply.

Colin.
