Sending a zipped file

What program do we use to zip or compress a file? I have to send a zipped file to my teacher and have never used this on my Mac before. People use WinZip on a PC.

Select the file in your Finder, ctrl-/right-click (i.e. hold down the Ctrl
key while clicking) the file and select "Create Archive" from the contextual
menu. You will obtain a zipped version of your file in the same folder which
also contains your original file.
