sending email attachment from MS Word or MS Excel 2007 Error

I can send an 2007 .xlsx and .docx file from MS word and Excel no problem.
But if I save the file to an earlier version (2003) and try to send it out
through MS word or Excel I get the following error.

"the messaging interface has returned an unknown error" start outlook again
if problem persists.

My friends 2007 excel and word send out earlier version no problem.... HELP!
