Is this Sent Items folder on the IMAP server or in your default folders?
What view do you have selected? What version of Outlook? Do you have any
rules defined?

The folder is on my imap server. I'm not sure what view it is, but i'm in
Outlook 2007. And I have not set up any rules to my knowledge.

Click View>Current View and state what's checked.

Well, look. Tools>Rules and Alerts.

It occurs to me that, in addition to Outlook saving a copy of outgoing
messages, that your SMTP server, running on the same system as the IMAP
server, may also be saving a copy. Can you access your mailbox on the
server via a web interface and check to see if there's a "save copies of
sent messages" option for the mailbox? If so, try disabling it on the
server and then see what happens.

okay my current view is IMAP MESSAGES. and there are no rules set up.

I logged onto my other server, AOL, and tried to find the "save copies of
sent messages" option...the only thing I could find that is relative is
"retain all mail i send in my Mail I've Sent folder". This option is already
turned off.

What I did do though was tried to fix it in Outlook by going to
Tools>Options>Email options and unchecked the "save copies of messages in
Sent Items folder". I sent a test email, and now there is only one copy of
the email I sent ( I used to have two). But it appears unread (bold) in the
sent items folder and still has my name instead of the person I sent it to.

The "IMAP Messages" view is an incoming message view. If you want to see
the view normally used by a Sent Items folder, change to the "Sent To" view.

Well, it was worth a look.

It's pretty clear you have a rule that moves sent messages to the IMAP
server. Unfortunately, there's no way for an outgoing rule to mark a
message as read. However, with Outlook 2007, you don't need the rule.
DIsable it and reenable the option to save sent messages. Everything should
work properly then.
