I use Outlook 2003 SP1 on a laptop that is on a domain at my office. The
office sends emails through a 'Microsoft Exchange Server'. Sometimes when I
send emails then are displayed in the outbox but only momentarily in italics
then in normal type. When I press Send they are not sent. If I open them I
can press Send again but the same thing happens. This occurs whether I am
online or offline.

Don't click Send unless you are viewing a folder other than the Outbox.

Do you have any anti-virus or anti-spam software that checks your
incoming/outgoing mail? If so, try disabling it. If that doesn't help, do
you have any other software that integrates with Outlook? If so, try
disabling it.

Could you post back with your results? The problem you're having seems to
be caused by third-party software that tries to integrate with Outlook, but
I'd like to get a better feel for what's doing it...

Thanks for the quick reply, I do have Norton Internet security and I have
disabled it as requested but the effect still occurs.

I have been doing more experimenting and have found another odd effect I
would like to bring to your attention in case it assists:

(all below effects are with Norton Internet security disabled)

When OFFLINE, with the OUTBOX otherwise EMPTY - if I compose an email and
click send it will immediately become non-italicised and will not be sent
when I next connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server.

When OFFLINE, with at least ONE NON-ITALICISED EMAIL ALREADY IN THE OUTBOX -
if I compose an email and click send this new email is displayed in italics
in the outbox and when I connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server it will be
sent.

WHEN OFFLINE, with at least ONE NON-ITALICISED EMAIL ALREADY IN THE OUTBOX -
if I compose an email and click send it is displayed in italics, if I then
close Outlook and re-open it the same email is now displayed in normal type.

WHEN OFFLINE, with at least ONE NON-ITALICISED EMAIL ALREADY IN THE OUTBOX -
if I compose TWO emails and click send it they displayed in italics, if I
then close Outlook and re-open it ONE of the recently composed emails is now
displayed in normal type, the other remains displayed in italics. If I then
close and re-open Outlook again both the recently composed emails are now
displayed in normal type.

Does that assist?

Thanks for your response, I opened Outlook. I was Offline. I opened my inbox.
I then pressed the button for new email and composed an email. I clicked
send. The new email disappeared and the Outlook window showing my inbox was
the only window displayed again. My outbox icon indicated there was one email
in it. I clicked on my outbox, the new email was displayed but not in
italics.

So this did not seem to work. Please see my reply to Jeff Stephenson's email.

From many posts in this group, it seems that the only way to actually
disable Norton's outgoing scans is to uninstall it and then reinstall it
without the mail scanning options.

All your symptoms point to a program other than Outlook opening your
outgoing mail and not resubmitting it for sending after it is done doing
whatever it does. Norton seems to be the likely candidate here...
