Sequence field

I'm relatively new to using sequence fields, but I have
been successful until today.

HERE'S WHAT I DO: Insert field braces with Ctrl F9.
Type "SEQ" [space] identifier such as "int." Toggle the
field codes, after which a "1" has always appeared.
Today I did the same thing but after toggling the field
codes no "1" appeared.

THEN THE MOST MYSTIFYING THING HAPPENED. For reasons I
don't know, I highlighted the space where the "1" should
have appeared when toggled, hit Alt+F3 and was able to
add the "int" in the autotext box and the sequence system
worked perfectly from that point on in that particular
sequence.

Thinking that this was an isolated incident, I kept
trying sequence fields with different identifiers and
each time the "invisible" 1 appeared.

Although eventually I get the job done, can you tell me
what in the world I've done to cause the first "1" to be
invisible, yet when highlighted works in autotext?!

Thanks so much.

After toggling off the field codes just press F9 (update field) and the one
will appear.

That is usually required for all fields that are created manually (using
Ctrl+F9).
