Sequential numbers in Table columns

How do I get numbered paragraphs in rows of a column in Tables?
Left hand col has a numbered pararaph (e.g 3.) I need the right hand column
in the same row to have numbered paragraphs 3.1, 3.2, 3.3. etc.
In the next row would be on the left 4. and I need 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 etc in the
right col.

Don't use a table for that purpose.

Insert sections in the document seperating the portion of the document that
need Numbering.
Then apply either Tabs (with desired indentation) or Columns (from Word
Format menu)
