Sequentially number a query

I simply want to number the rows sequetially in a query in the order they are
sorted in. Any ideas? Thanks.

That is a very unusual requirement. Say you have this in place. What
are you going to do with those numbers? If we understand better, we
may be able to make better suggestions.
