Series colour changing

I have made a user-defined chart with colours for 8 series. I have
made a chart with this custom type and it starts out fine. However,
when I drag the blue handle on the spreadsheet to decrease the amount
plotted I start to loose my colours. I later resize the plot area to
the original 8 and all the colours have changed.
I have to keep re-applying the chart type.
I am using Excel XP. Any ideas?
