server dimmed under Tool tab

Why is the text "server" dimmed under Tool tab of FP2003.
Is it related to a database server?

You need to be logged on to your live site for it to be active.
( or your IIS based local site )

Steve and Randy,

I have had that problem recently. I was trying to create a password protection for a web file. I followed the instructions exactly as given in both a text I have and the "Help" section of my FP 2003.(I use a XP Professional operating system.) Nowhere was there mention that person had to have the site live on the server. I talked with a tech support person and he said he was having the same problem in trying to assist a caller. It was only when he asked someone at the tech office that he was told about having to be live on the server.
In my case, that hasn't helped a bit and I still haven't gotten an answer. If anyone want to throw more light on this issue, I, for one, would be appreciative.

The documentation is a little flaky, to be sure.

But, the answer still is that you must open the live site via FP to have
that feature. And, that feature is ONLY available if the host has allowed
it. Many don't. If they don't know how to configure it, they should
certainly do some research.

And also it depends upon the type of server.
If Apache/UNIX with the web masters CPanel, it's done via the CPanel "Web Protect" feature.

I'll take your word for how it works under Unix - on IIS you're at the mercy
of your host. Mine (IIS) allows the feature but I still wouldn't want to use
it - to log in most users are used to seeing a form (HTML) asking for
username and password, from the server side you'd authenticate them against
a database. I really don't think the FP security features are useful atall -
again my opinion is purely based on IIS.

Thanks to all who have replied to any part of my post. I am new on this board and am finding out that there are a lot of very smart, well informed people helping others.

My server is bCentral. Whether or not that is Unix or some other I don't know. I suppose I can call and ask. Do any of you know what bCentral is and if it is a "top of the line" server?
Thanks. G-town

You should probably visit the bcentral web site and view their
documentation.
