Can anyone suggest how to troubleshoot this error I get
when trying to publish?

server error 'images/.xvpics' does not refer to a page or
folder in this web...

I didn't experience this a week ago when I published. I
have added a few pages and hyperlinks. Any ideas on
narrowing down this problem?

This is not a critical problem. You just have one or more pictures on your
web which are not used. this message is only a warning to reduce your web
size.
