server file deletion

Over the past few years I have put a number of photos on the server that are
no longer part of the existing web pages. I removed them but when I publish
front page just adds all of them back on the server. How do I get front page
NOT to put them back on ... note that we are talking about a lot of photos
.... over 150M
There is no practial way to go through my computer's directory and remove
them there that I know of.
Just need to know how, if any, to prevent front page from sending unused
files back to the server web site ... if possible

If you removed them from your files within FrontPage, they are gone, so how
could they add them back in?

Perhaps you are removing them from original files on your hard drive, and
not removing them after you open FP and are not deleting them from say, the
images folder?

As Tom said, if you delete the files within FrontPage they are deleted -
forever. The only way to restore them is to manually bring them back from a
backup.
When publishing, FP will only publish what is in the source website - it
cannot magically produce files that aren't there. But that does not mean
that any files not held in the local web that exist on the remote web will
definitely be deleted from the remote web - they should be deleted if you
publish changed pages only, but there are circumstances where this will
fail, including:

1) You delete an entire folder from the local site - the corresponding
folder on the server may be ignored, and thus retained.

2) The meta data on the remote site may be out of synch with that on the
local site.

If you have frontPage 2003, one solution to find unmatched files (files on
one web that are not on the other) is to use Remote Site view.
Open remote site view and log in to the remote server.
Change the view dropdown from Folder Contents to Files in Conflict --
This will take a long time to populate the screens.
Click on the Status column heading to sort the status categories.
Look for Unmatched - these are files on one site that are not on the other,
they can be selected and deleted from the screens being shown. Remember
that any deleted files are gone forever - there is NO recycle bin when using
frontPage.

OK, let me try to clarify a little .... The files we are talking about a
images, thousands of them. These are on both the server and the computer.
Unfortunatly I do not know which ones are actually being used with the
present pages. I publish sets of photos, like 'Memorial Day' on my site by
linking each photo to an htm page.... Each month I do this I name the photo
and the page link to match the date ... this means that the older photo
remains on the server, and my computer, and never gets replaced or
overwritten. This has created a situation where there are thousands of
photos, not being used, on both the server and my computer. Unfortunatly I
don't know exactly which photos are, and are not, being used by the present
pages.
As this has created a site that is now well over 450 Megs, the majority
being the old photos ... I really need to get them off of the server. Seems
like there ought to be an easy way to tell font page to publish just that
which is actually being used so that I could delete all the photos on the
server and then republish just the ones being used.
OK, hope that helps
If not please email me so I can give you whatever information you need
thanks

FrontPage doesn't do what you're asking. It doesn't know whether or not you
are using that image. If you can't figure out which ones you're using,
delete them all and publish the web, emptying everything. That, just insert
the ones you want.

View->Reports->Problems->unlinked files

Click on the Links To column header to sort
Click the Type dropdown arrow and set the filters to only show image types
(.jpg, .gif, .png)

The images with 0 in the Links To column are likely candidates for
deletion - any image with a non-zero number in this column has that number
of links pointing to it.

However, this method is not foolproof. Any links that use absolute or root
relative
(like http://example.com/imagename.jpg or /images/imagename.jpg) methods
will show as zero in the Links to column, as will links that are created
with Javascript or other scripting (such as server side scripts).
This is the best that FrontPage can do - it may be enough for your site.
See http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/unlinked-files.aspx for more
information
