Server issue in frontpage

B

Brad Waddell

In Frontpage 2003 when I choose the Tools/Server menu - it is greyed out.
Under Site Settings it says "no server is currently in use" - yet I use and
publish to my own Win2k box every day, it has frontpage extensions loaded on
it. How can I fix this so I can use the advanced server features like most
visited pages? thanks.

Do you have the web open at http when you click on Tools | Server?

are you running IIS (I assume you are since it comes with Win 2K (?).)

Sounds like you either are not running any server software (e.g. IIS) .

Have you published the site to your localhost folder and run the site as in
http://localhost/index.htm
(or equivalent).

Jim Buyens

Apparently, you're using a disk-based Web locally. A disk-
based Web doesn't involve a Web sever, and thus has no
server functions.

To configure your live site, open it directly in
FrontPage, using an http:// URL.

yes - if by "open" you mean I have a live connection to the server and can
publish at will.

yes

Sounds like you either are not running any server software (e.g. IIS) .

I run IIS with the frontpage extensions installed and working for the web
site I have built. Is there another way to test/restore the server
extensions except the web control panel where they are added and checked? I
get no errors.
Have you published the site to your localhost folder and run the site as in

No, what would be the point? I don't want to run it on my local machine,
which does not have IIS loaded on it. Please explain more, and how this will
help. thanks!

No, nothing is local. Using IIS & FP Extensions on an HTTP/URL web server.
Here is the site name: qodbc.com - is there a way to test the server
extensions are working? thanks.

I meant that you must have open the site directly in FP, via File Menu | Open Web / Site on the
server where you want to use Tools | Setting

You have to use the control panel provided by your host, if this is remote server and you don't have
directly access to the server.

If this is a remotely hosted server, have you contact the host to see what features of the FP2002
extensions they support. So features are limited/not available depending on which OS the site is
hosted on, as well as the version (FP2000 or FP2002) extensions.

According to http://qodbc.com/_vti_inf.html your site has the FP2000 SE
- (FPVersion="4.0.2.5526")

To see if there are any problems open the online site in FP and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
In FP File Open Web/Site and enter http://www.qodbc.com/ and log in

Check Tools Server in your online web to see what your host has activated

control panel provided by your host, if this is remote server and you don't
have directly access to the server.

I own and control the Windows 2000 box this server is running, that is why
I'm asking how I can fix it myself, thanks!

Ahh, (lightbulb) Open the site directly in Frontpage, that is probably the
missing link, thanks.

The only option on the Tools/Server menu after recalc is Permissions, how
can I get the Admin home page to work? thanks!

Get your admin or host to assign you Administrator permissions.

Upgrading to the FP2002 extensions wouldn't hurt.

(sigh) - once again, I am the admin - top of the chain - guy in charge, I
own the box, I have admin rights. Please tell me how I can fix the Frontpage
extensions so that they work from FP 2003 client! In the meantime I will
look for the FP extensions updates. thanks!

Just install them and you can use them. You must have IIS already installed.

The Extensions are available here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...45-1884-4a16-a8cb-25d2f0815fa3&displaylang=en

You should also get this update:

You can download the FP2002 extensions from:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpovrw.asp

After you install that, the administrtion pages should be at:

http://<your-server-name>/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll

For starters, I would try running Check Server Health with all the Fix
buttons checked.

If that doesn't solve your problem, try the advice at:

There are actually 3 updates that need to be installed. Unfortunately, I
don't have access to the URLs today.
