Server trusted only IP

E

Eric Stevens

I am on the last piece of the install. When I open
professional the make server trusted box comes up. Which
is normal. However, in this case when I hit make server
trusted it says that I have to make the site trusted. I
have already done this in the Trusted site zones in IE.
What is wierd is that the company I am at is using ip
address only and not DNS. Could this be the problem? Ex: I
can get to web access through
http://17.1.2.195/projectserver but not when I type
http://servernam/projectserver. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Eric

The ability to convert DOMAIN names e.g. www.foo.bar.com is only done via DNS. DNS replies to requests for www.foo.bar.com with the
actual IP address e.g. 1.2.3.4. This is only a simplistic explanation of what DNS can do for you.

To cheat you could set up a WINS server and that may resolve the name resolution only if you are using a pure WIndows environment but this
is not as efficient as DNS.

Thus to answer your question, yes you need an DNS server on your network to resolve names. Or you could try setting up a WINS server to
do the same thing but there will be small issues with this. Mastering DNS is hard, but those who are good at DNS Servers' are near the top of
the Internet most-wanted Skill Food chain.
