Service pack 3

Hi, I have Windows XP medica centre edition, I think it is 2002 and it has
service pack 2 as well installed. The upgrades wantged to install service
pack 3 but asked for computer back up etc. first. I stopped this until I
found out about it. Reading through microsoft there seems to be problems
with it.
What is service pack 3 for. Do I actually need it. Can I set a restore
point on my computer before downloading so that if things don't work right I
can return to the restore point. I have never done that beore so some tips
would be good.
Where does it get downloaded to so that if I have to delete it off my system
I can. Ie if it doesn't work or there are faults do I delete it off the
system before going to the restore point?
I have read the micrsoft data about it and it seems a lengthy process to go
through before installng and some of the stuff to do I don't understand.
Can anyone pleawe advise?
Always grateful for any help

This group is for MS Office, are you asking about a Service Pack 3 for
Office 2003 or are you asking about the Service pack for Windows XP. If
your questions pertain to Windows XP, then please post them in the
Windows XP group.

Thanks.

SP3 is primarily security enhancements, you need it as you do any security
update.
A restore point is created during the installation
You are allways advised to backup data prior to installing an sp, you should
in any case have data backups.
The last WinXP pc I updated went flawlessly.

In any case, you should have posted to a group that supports your o/s and
not the Office group. You would find the groups easier to follow if you used
the default newsreader, Outlook Express and not the web interface
