Set up sound for MSOutlook 2003 but it doesn't work.

I'm running Windows XP and MS Outlook 2003. I'm an experienced user and I've
done all of the right things to set up the sound for incoming messages. When
I click the button to sample the sound it plays great but in reality when
mail arrives there is no audible sound. Does anybody have a clue what's going
on?
