Setting Resource Availability MSP 07 bug

M

Milan Bortel

Hi,

I got really weird bug when trying to set resource availability changing by
date in MSP 2007.

Situation:
default - available from (N/A), available to (N/A), units (100%)

change -
1) available from (N/A), available to (12/31/2009), units (100%)
2) available from (1/1/2010), available to (keep this blank), units (50%)

When I type in the 50% value it works correctly, but when I try to fill in
the value using the spinner instead - MSP crashes.

Any ideas why?

I cannot duplicate that behavior here. I tested in three machines.
My setup is XP SP3, Project 2007 SP2
W7 x64 P2007 SP2
Vista Ultimate x86 P2007 SP2

Do you have the latest service packs and patches installed?

Well,

that may cause troubles, the configuration is XP SP2 and MSP 2007 SP1.

I'll recommend to install SP2 and hope it'll help :)

I tried to type N/A instead of keeping it blank but that doesn't work for me...

(on other pc it works perfectly...)

Since it works on one PC and not the other ... clearly the PC's are
different. I can imagine how hard it will be to figure out what is
different as it probably is a flawed system file or something, and
probably not specific to Project. Since it's a control, probaby
provivded by Windows, helps this hypothesis.

Ideas:
: look at Windows system restore for clues and consider restore
: reinstall Project
: reinstall Service Packs
: restore Windows from image backup
: reinstall Windows

Hi Mike,

it's like this - we have 12 computers in class and the bug occurs on every
pc, no matter what project file you have opened. Even in new created ones.

So I guess it's the Project fault.

We'll try to install SP2 and see if it helps.

I'll let you know.

Hunch: It's probably not a bug in Project as others in world would have
seen this by now. Maybe the will fix if the flawed file is updated.
It's surely something with your installation of Project, Windows, and
whatever.

try:

: reinstall Project
: install Project with all SP's on a "fresh" Windows machine (not
touched by your students)

You previously said that it worked on one machine. That machine now no
longer working? What changed. Or what is different about that machine?

Ouch...

I installed SP2, but it didn't help!!

What comes next? Is there any available patch which is not included in SP2
and could help?

Thnx guys.

Hi Milan,

I can't reproduce your symptoms - my spin control works as it should. Mind
you, I'm using Windows7 - which version are you using? I'm not convinced
that your installations of Project are at fault, and I leaning towards a
re-installation or repair of some sort - maybe it's a mouse or display
problem. Perhaps it would be less expensive for you to live with it and not
use the spin control.

Let me chime in here for a second.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but MS Project will crash on some HP laptops
with biometric software enabled (the fingerprint thing). I've only seen
it happen on laptops in Europe, specifically in France and Italy, which makes
me think it's tied to a language pack issue. The issue will happen almost
whenever a drop down field is clicked.

I didn't scan the entire thread, but are you using HP laptops with biometric
software? If so, disable the biometric software in the Control Panel > Remove
Programs.

I cannot reproduce here either using Project 2007 SP-2 installed to
XP SP-3. There have been a number of hotfixes that were released
since SP-2. In a quick scan I didn't see anything specific to this
issue, but you may want to take a look yourself. To the best of my
recollection, I do not have any of the hotfixes post SP-2 installed.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Well, Mike...

For sure, I can live with it. It's just that on my home PC it works
correctly (even without SP1 installed on my MSP2007). And when I try the same
thing on pc in our training center, it crashes... And during the MSP training
I need to say to clients:"please, don't use the spinner, just type the value
otherwise it crashes"... Would be nice to get rid of it...

We have XP SP2 and MSP2007 SP1 (SP2 didn't change a thing). We're going to
have Win7 soon.

Anyway, thanx for help.

Well, Mike...

I could live with it but since I am a MSP trainer and I always say to
clients:"please, don't use the spinner otherwise it crashes"... would be nice
to get rid of that...

We have XP SP2 and MSP2007, but soon having Win7 instead.

Maybe it's because of SP1? I tried it on my home PC with MSP2007 (without
SP1) and it worked for me.

Anyway, thnx for help :)

Milan,

Since it work at home without SP1, it indicates that the problem is not
related to Project service packs.

Have you tried doing a system restore on the XP machines? The control
at fault is probably delivered by the operating system, not Project. Or,
put a fresh copy of XP from backup onto a test machine and try it.

Hi Julie,

I guess I'll give up on this issue... Just wait on Windows 7 to be installed
as standard in our training center... Hope it's because of XP fault.

Thnx for post,

Rob,

we have standard images, which we install "fresh" on each course. And even
on new installed image this bug appears.

It works on my home pc correctly, though.

Probably it's something between XP and MSP... reinstalling MSP didn't help,
installing SP2 didn't work either.

As I said to JulieS.... Will wait for Win7 to come (it's matter of few
weeks) and hope it works..
