Setting resource units

Hi,

I have a project that I want one of my resources to be able to commit any
available time to (to his assigned tasks). Is there any way when assigning
a resource to a task to have the percentage of time committed to that task
to be the total remaining availability for that resource?

I accidentally had the resource assigned at 100% and then tried leveling and
the undesired result was that it scheduled the task for months into the
future because he was not available at 100% of the time until months down
the road. I would prefer the system to be able to say, he is only available
50% of the time, so that is what we will use.

Is there any way to accomplish something like this?

Thanks,

Richard Millard

If you know that you want the resource assigned at 50%, then assign the
resource that way. The system doesn't have a function that will assign based
on remaining availability. Keep in mind that the system allows
over-allocation of resources. To use leveling correctly, you need to tweak
your leveling settings. It sounds as though you may have tried using the
defaults, which would cause the behavior you describe. Also note that the
leveling function in Project is no panacea and requires a little practice to
get full command of it.
