Setting up a web page to print

E

Ed Wood

A couple of days ago, I asked how you could go about printing a web page
without using the printericon button at the top of the browser window.
Murray, gave me some good information, but still suggested that I use the
normal printer icon in the browser to print the page.

A bright idea just occurred to me. I could set up an Adobe Acrobat button to
open Adobe on the user's system, then they could print a better quality
document. The problem is, I don't know how to incorporate this procedure into
FP 2003 to upload it to my web server.

My web url is: http://www.lowpricecalling.net. If you would like to check
out this site and make a suggestion how i can acomplish this task, I would
appreciate any help I can get.

Regards, and have a good weekend.

Murray,

I don't know the answer to that question. However, I have gone to many sites
that say that Acrobat Reader is required to read a particuar document, and
there is a link to dl a free copy of Acrobat. When you have Acrobat
installed, if you click on the link, it starts Acrobat automatically, and
dl's the .pdf file to your computer. You can then either save the file, or
print it out later.

This seems to me to be the solution to my problems. The company that I
represent (TouchTone Communications), has an agents web site where I can dl
the files in .pdf. Also, I can fill out an application on the site and then
print it out. They do not have any setup where a potential customer can sign
up online. This is the reason I am trying to set up a website where they can
access the form, fill it out, and fax it to me for signing up.

Thanks for your input.

Ed

If you have the Acrobat PLUGIN installed in your browser, then the PDF file
will open in the browser using the plugin. If you do not have it installed,
then the PDF file will download to your local system.

I don't know whether you can do what you want from within the plugin....

Murray,

Here is an example of what I am talking about.

http://www.state.ms.us/frameset.jsp?URL=http://www.sos.state.ms.us/

This link takes you to the Mississippi Secretary of State's web page where
you can download a voter registration application. This is what I would like
to do with the application for telephone service on my web site.

Check it out, and see if you have any ideas how to do this in FP 2003.

Ed

E

Ed Wood

I forgot to add that the browser says on the tab in the open programs bar at
the bottom that this window is an "External link from the Mississippi.gov Web
Site - Microsoft Internet Explorer".

I don't exactly understand what this means.

Thanks again,
Ed

M

Murray

Isn't it amazing that a public service page like that would have so many
inaccessibilities on it. It's downright depressing <sigh>. The page lists
a link to an Accessibility Policy - go there. Then test the page you just
came from by entering its URI - http://www.sos.state.ms.us/. How sad is
that?

The link on the voter registration page is linked to a PDF file. That's
about as simple as it gets.

<td width="93%" valign="top" align="left"><a href="VoterReg2004.pdf">Voter
Registration Application</a></td>

So - import the PDF into the website. Link to it. Publish.

E

Once again, thanks for your help. This gives me somewhere to start. I will
work on it and see what I can accomplish.

That's just the status bar of the browser. It tells you
wha't going on inside the browser window.

Murray has the right idea. You can copy the Abode Logo
from their website to use as a button. They have the html
for you to copy and paste there.

If you open the page in FP2003, and place your cursor
where you want the link to appear, you then right-click,
and choose 'InsertHyperlink' from the menu. The dialogue
box that opens will ask you what you want to point to, if
you recently opened the document in your browser,
choose "RecentlyBrowsedPages" from the left-hand icons,
and scroll through the links you've visited to find the
pdf. Click on the link when you find it and it will
appear in the 'http://' line and click OK.

Do the same thing if you have your site opened live on
the server. Assuming you have uploaded the pdf to your
server, choose it from the list of files on your server
in the main window of the dialogue box. Click on it and
then click 'OK'. By default, when the visitor clicks on
the link to the pdf, the browser will run Adobe if it's
installed, to open the file, or the visitor will be
prompted to download it. You add the icon with the link
for the download in case they have those features
disabled or unavailable in their browser.

Ed (D) & Murray,

Thanks to both of you for your excellent help! I did copy the Adobe Button
and hyperlink to my index page in FP 2003. I also was able to use the html
code that Murray sent me (with my modifications for my .pdf file) to set a
link to open Adobe Reader and display the .pdf file that I wanted to make
available to the user.

I checked everything out in my offline browser window and everything worked
like a charm! I then uploaded the files (index.htm, adobe.gif, and
application.pdf) to my web server.

When I logged onto my web site http://lowpricecalling.net, everything
displayed as expected. The Adobe hyperlink loaded the Adobe Acrobat Reader dl
page. But when I clicked on the "Application" hyperlink, the browser
information line said "Downloading [filename of file]), and nothing happened.

My next step is to contact the tech support of my Web hosting service and
find out why I cannot access the application.pdf file on the server. The
application.pdf file shows up in my members folder, but I cannot access it at
all. All I am able to do is rename it, move it, or delete it.

Have a good Sunday. We are beginning a revival today in the church that I
pastor, so I will be pretty busy for the next week. I might have to put this
project on the "back burner" for a few days.

Chris,

Actually, there are three links on the site. The first is a link entitled
'Click Here", which is a link to the In-State telephone rates with the Long
Distance telco I represent. The second link (which is the link to the .pdf
file that will not work) is the word "Application". The final link is the
Adobe button which takes the user to
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html where they can dl a free
copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

As to the load speed of the web host, I don't know the answer to that. I
have a dsl connection, and do not have any problems loading the index page. I
will follow your advice, however, and check out other web hosting services.

Here is the actual message that I get when trying to open up the 3.5 LOA.pdf
file by clicking on the "Application" button:

"Downloading from site:
http://www.freewebs.com/lowpricecalling/TouchTone/3.5 LOA.pdf"

The computer then goes into limbo, and nothing happens. I don't know if the
server does not know what to do, of if I have done something wrong in the
html coding. I tried the index page in my IE6 browser window inside FP 2003
before uploading it to Freewebs.com, and it worked then. I suspect the
problem is with the web hosting site.

That problem could be due to the space and decimal point
you have in the file name here:TouchTone/3.5%20LOA.pdf.

I had to set up downloadable pdf's for the School section
of my Church's website, and I ran into that same problem.
I took out all the spaces and 'foreign' characters from
the file names and they open fine now.

Name your file something like this: 35LOA.pdf

Do the same thing if you have your site opened live on

then click 'OK'. By default, when the visitor clicks on
the link to the pdf, the browser will run Adobe if it's

prompted to download it. You add the icon with the link
for the download in case they have those features
disabled or unavailable in their browser.

Murray,

I don't know the answer to that question.
However, I have gone to many
sites
that say that Acrobat Reader is required to read
a particuar document,
and
there is a link to dl a free copy of Acrobat.
When you have Acrobat
installed, if you click on the link, it starts
Acrobat automatically,
and
dl's the .pdf file to your computer. You can then
either save the file,
or
print it out later.

This seems to me to be the solution to my
problems. The company that I
represent (TouchTone Communications), has an
agents web site where I
can
dl
the files in .pdf. Also, I can fill out an
application on the site and
then
print it out. They do not have any setup where a
potential customer can
sign
up online. This is the reason I am trying to set
up a website where
they
can
access the form, fill it out, and fax it to me
for signing up.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Ed - I did that, too. It took forever, said done in
the status bar, but no document. SO I made a link in
FrontPage to your file, and I right-clicked it and
chose "Save Target As" and the download dialogue said the
file is 1.67MB and it was transferring at 2kb per second.
I'm on 1.5Megabyte DSL, and it took fifteen minutes to
download your file. It should have taken about 20
seconds. But once I had it, it opens fine.

There must be a bandwidth restriction on that server. The
download was from www.freewebs.com. You probably would do
better on a different server. Look at these:

http://www.christianwebhost.com (starts at $9.95 per
month)
http://www.outdoorwebhosting.com (starts at $3.99 per
month)

If the phone provider insists on that form to get
service, theres no way around it, but if they'yy take the
application from people in another format, you can
convert it to HTML, it would be a piece of work, but it
would open in any browser and they can just print it off.
-----Original Message-----
Ed,

Thanks for the help. I did as you suggested and it worked fine in my offline
IE6 browser. I then uploaded the pages to my web hosting site. When I tried
to open the .pdf file by logging on to the internet, using the url:
http://www.lowpricecalling.org, and clicking on the application link, it
opened a new window, said that it was downloading the .pdf file. After about
one min, it informed me that it was done, and all I had was a blank screen.

I have contacted the tech support (to no avail) of the web hosting site. I
guess I will be shopping around for a new web host.

That problem could be due to the space and decimal point

I took out all the spaces and 'foreign' characters from

Name your file something like this: 35LOA.pdf

I also set the target for the links as "_blank" so they

Chris,

Actually, there are three links on the site. The
first
is a link entitled
'Click Here", which is a link to the In-State
telephone
rates with the Long
Distance telco I represent. The second link (which is the link to the .pdf
file that will not work) is the word "Application".
The
final link is the
Adobe button which takes the user to
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html where they can dl a free
copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

As to the load speed of the web host, I don't know
the
answer to that. I
have a dsl connection, and do not have any problems loading the index page. I
will follow your advice, however, and check out other web hosting services.

Here is the actual message that I get when trying to open up the 3.5 LOA.pdf
file by clicking on the "Application" button:

"Downloading from site:
http://www.freewebs.com/lowpricecalling/TouchTone/3.5% 20LOA.pdf"

The computer then goes into limbo, and nothing
happens.
I don't know if the
server does not know what to do, of if I have done something wrong in the
html coding. I tried the index page in my IE6 browser window inside FP 2003
before uploading it to Freewebs.com, and it worked
then.
I suspect the
problem is with the web hosting site.

When I logged onto my web site

displayed as expected. The Adobe hyperlink loaded the Adobe Acrobat Reader

find out why I cannot access the application.pdf file on the server. The
application.pdf file shows up in my members

Murray has the right idea. You can copy the

Ed,

Therein is the problem! TouchTone will not accept any application except the
35LOA.pdf file that I have on this site. They have apps ranging from 3.5
cents/min to 5.9 cents/min, but I choose to offer the lower price plan to
keep customers, not have them switch to a cheaper plan next week.

TouchTone does not have any provision for a potential customer to sign up
online just now. In the agent's portal, I can fill out the application
online, print it out, and have the customer sign it, then fax it to the
company.

This is the reason that I am trying to set up my own website, so customers
anywhere in the "lower 48" can fill out an app and fax it to me or TT. I am
trying to get TT to grant me access to that format, so that I can place a
link on my page for the customer to fill out the application online.

I represent two other long distance telephone companies, both of them
Christian providers, Accxx and PowerNet Global (PNG). They both have online
signup capabilities. See my website for these two at
http://www.lowpricecalling.com (I own domain names lowpricecalling.com,
lowpricecalling.net, lowpricecalling.org).

Since I live in an independent telephone district area (non-RBOC), the
independent telephone provider charges a surcharge for long distance access
to their customers. This surcharge is passed on by Accxx and PNG to their
customers, making their rates higher for non-RBOC customers. This is why I
offer TT to them.

I have paid an annual fee to Angeltime.com for a 100mg web hosting domain. I
am trying to figure out how to ul my files to their server, but I am having
difficulty in doing so. When I get it all figured out, I will let you know,
so you can check it out.

Thanks for all of you good suggestions and help.

ps, our revival is going great. We are having the largest crowds ever, in
the 10 years I have been here. Sunflower Baptist is a really small
congregation. We usually have about 25 for Sunday School on Sunday, and
around 40 for worship service. We have been averaging around 140 per service
during revival. Pretty good for a small town of about 150 citizens.
