That problem could be due to the space and decimal point
you have in the file name here:TouchTone/3.5%20LOA.pdf.
I had to set up downloadable pdf's for the School section
of my Church's website, and I ran into that same problem.
I took out all the spaces and 'foreign' characters from
the file names and they open fine now.
Name your file something like this: 35LOA.pdf
I also set the target for the links as "_blank" so they

Chris,
Actually, there are three links on the site. The first
is a link entitled
'Click Here", which is a link to the In-State telephone
rates with the Long
Distance telco I represent. The second link (which is
the link to the .pdf
file that will not work) is the word "Application". The
final link is the
Adobe button which takes the user to
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
where they can dl a free
copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
As to the load speed of the web host, I don't know the
answer to that. I
have a dsl connection, and do not have any problems
loading the index page. I
will follow your advice, however, and check out other
web hosting services.
Here is the actual message that I get when trying to
open up the 3.5 LOA.pdf
file by clicking on the "Application" button:
"Downloading from site:
http://www.freewebs.com/lowpricecalling/TouchTone/3.5%
20LOA.pdf"
The computer then goes into limbo, and nothing happens.
I don't know if the
server does not know what to do, of if I have done
something wrong in the
html coding. I tried the index page in my IE6 browser
window inside FP 2003
before uploading it to Freewebs.com, and it worked then.
I suspect the
problem is with the web hosting site.

Ed

I looked but there seemed to be only two links on your
page and neither of
them were to the document you mentioned.
btw; you may want to look for a better host. I waited
quite a while for
their server to figure out who you were and which sit
to redirect me to.
pretty weak (IMHO).

Ed (D) & Murray,
Thanks to both of you for your excellent help! I did
copy the Adobe Button
and hyperlink to my index page in FP 2003. I also
was able to use the html
code that Murray sent me (with my modifications for
my .pdf file) to set a
link to open Adobe Reader and display the .pdf file
that I wanted to make
available to the user.
I checked everything out in my offline browser
window and everything
worked
like a charm! I then uploaded the files (index.htm,
adobe.gif, and
application.pdf) to my web server.
When I logged onto my web site
http://lowpricecalling.net, everything
displayed as expected. The Adobe hyperlink loaded
the Adobe Acrobat Reader
dl
page. But when I clicked on the "Application"
hyperlink, the browser
information line said "Downloading [filename of
file]), and nothing
happened.
My next step is to contact the tech support of my
Web hosting service and
find out why I cannot access the application.pdf
file on the server. The
application.pdf file shows up in my members folder,
but I cannot access it
at
all. All I am able to do is rename it, move it, or
delete it.
Have a good Sunday. We are beginning a revival today
in the church that I
pastor, so I will be pretty busy for the next week.
I might have to put
this
project on the "back burner" for a few days.

That's just the status bar of the browser. It
tells you
wha't going on inside the browser window.
Murray has the right idea. You can copy the Abode
Logo
from their website to use as a button. They have
the html
for you to copy and paste there.
If you open the page in FP2003, and place your
cursor
where you want the link to appear, you then right-
click,
and choose 'InsertHyperlink' from the menu. The
dialogue
box that opens will ask you what you want to point
to, if
you recently opened the document in your browser,
choose "RecentlyBrowsedPages" from the left- hand
icons,
and scroll through the links you've visited to
find the
pdf. Click on the link when you find it and it will
appear in the '
http://' line and click OK.
Do the same thing if you have your site opened
live on
the server. Assuming you have uploaded the pdf to
your
server, choose it from the list of files on your
server
in the main window of the dialogue box. Click on
it and
then click 'OK'. By default, when the visitor
clicks on
the link to the pdf, the browser will run Adobe if
it's
installed, to open the file, or the visitor will be
prompted to download it. You add the icon with the
link
for the download in case they have those features
disabled or unavailable in their browser.

I forgot to add that the browser says on the tab
in the
open programs bar at
the bottom that this window is an "External link
from
the Mississippi.gov Web
Site - Microsoft Internet Explorer".
I don't exactly understand what this means.
Thanks again,
Ed

Murray,
Maybe I can just copy the Adobe button to my
web
page, install the .pdf
file
on the server, and point the Adobe button to
that
page, and have it work.
It
is worth a try.

If you have the Acrobat PLUGIN installed in
your
browser, then the PDF
file
will open in the browser using the plugin.
If you
do not have it
installed,
then the PDF file will download to your local
system.
I don't know whether you can do what you
want from
within the plugin....
