Setting up enterprise calendars in 2007

Our organization has different work weeks for different types of resources.
For example, the project managers and consultants work 8 hr days while the
programmers work 7 hr days. What's the best way to set this scenario up
using Project Server 2007 so that the PM's will be able to assign the proper
calendar for their resoources. Or is the best way to define two base
calendars and then assign them to the resources in Resource Center? Is
there any way for the PM's to manage the "work weeks" in the individual
calendars on their projects. The 'Details' button is deactivated on the
"Change working Time" screen.

Thanks

I would recommend that you create at least two enterprise Calendars in the
Project Server 2007 system. Begin by modifying the enterprise Standard
calendar and entering company holidays on this calendar. Because this
calendar already specifies an 8-hour working day, you do not need to modify
it any further. Then create a new enterprise Calendar that is a copy of the
Standard calendar and set up the 7-hour working day. Create other Base
Calendars as needed for unique working schedules.

After you create these calendars, open the Enteprise Resource Pool and check
out all resources in the system. For each resource, specify the correct
Base Calendar value. For managers and consultants, leave the Standard
calendar selected. For programmers, you need to select the 7-hour/day
calendar. Save and close the Enterprise Resource Pool.

When your PM's assign resources to tasks, the system will schedule the task
according to the resource's Base Calendar schedule. Therefore, the project
managers do not need to manage "work weeks" for the resources assigned to
tasks.

WARNING: The biggest problem your PM's will have is the calculation of
Duration. Because Duration is calculated using an 8-hour working day for
every task in a project, the tasks with only programmers assigned will show
"funky" Duration values. Your PM's will need to learn to live with this, as
there is no way to change the Duration equation on a task by task basis.

Hope this helps.

How about if you kept everyone on a standard 8 hour day, and then added an
'idle' task for the programmers corresponding to 1 hour per day? It's a bit
of a workaround, but it might do the trick.
